Riot Mortdog teases new late-game TFT Set 12 Charms, prompting fears of Patch 14.18 meta

New Charms designed to disrupt late-game meta.

The Set 12 Charm mechanic in Teamfight Tactics will get multiple new late-game effects added through Patch 14.18—and players are worried it may warp the end-game lobby meta.

Charms in TFT Set 12 have been hit or miss for players. The flavor is spot-on for casuals, while competitive players are worried about how they can shift the lobby meta. Charms were hit with balance changes through Patch 14.17 and a few new ones were added. Feeling satisfied with the state of the Set 12 mechanic, the TFT design team has crafted 10 end-game Charms to drop through Patch 14.18. Revealed by game design director Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer on Sept. 3 through Twitter/X, all of them are Stage Four-plus Charms and a majority are combat power effects.

The addition of late-game Charms is intended to offer players more options, according to Mortdog. Six of the 10 new Charms were revealed on Sept. 3, along with a rework applied to the Desperate Plea Charm.

  • Guild of Thieves: Cost eight gold. Gain three temporary Thief’s Gloves for one round.
  • Barrier: Cost six gold. At the start of next combat, your team gains a 1,000 shield that decays over five seconds.
  • Paragon: Costs zero gold. At the start of next combat, your team’s physical damage is dealt as magic damage.
  • Counterspell: Costs four gold. At the start of next combat, Mana Reave all enemies.
  • Summon Golem: Costs eight gold. Summon a large Golem equipped with defensive items for one round.
  • Poof: At the start of next combat, your units execute enemies that fall below 200 health.
  • Desperate Plea: At the start of next combat, reduce incoming player damage by 80 percent.

Players are concerned about late-game Charms impacting lobby standings, specifically new Charms like Counterspell and Desperate Plea.

“Late game fights coming down to Charms RNG is in my opinion very bad design,” a Twitter/X user said. Others voiced concerns over the cost of specific Charms and some warned about too many “feel bad” moments taking place if a Charm can drastically change lobby rankings.

You can test out the new Charms for yourself when they hit the live servers through TFT Set 12 Patch 14.18 on Sept. 11.
