Baldur’s Gate 3: How to get out of jail in BG3

Just be careful on your way out.

Baldur’s Gate 3 begins by letting you loot weapons, books, armor, and more. However, in large areas, people are watching you, and if you’re caught stealing, you’ll be sent to jail. If this happens, there are three main ways to get out of jail in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Every way to escape prison in Baldur’s Gate 3

Whether playing solo or with friends, there are three ways you can escape prison in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Interacting with the environment, like breaking the wood walls in Druid Grove or entering the hole in the wall in Goblin Camp.
  • Lockpicking the door, either using your imprisoned character or a party member.
  • Glitching your way out, which I did in Druid Grove after interacting with Sazza from my cell. My character just popped right out of it after the interaction was over.
Tip: Equip Astarion

Astarion will always be able to get you out of a pinch due to his base build of being a thief and a rogue. He is efficient with lockpicks and can sneak around with ease.

How to break out of the Druid’s Grove jail in BG3

You can break out of jail in Druid’s Grove by breaking the wood walls on the side of the cell. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. From your actions menu, select your bare hands attack
  2. Choose the wood wall as the object you’d like to attack
  3. Attack the wall until it breaks.
  4. Once the wood wall has broken, follow the path around the prison until you find an area with the Sazza in the cage.
  5. Jump toward the cage Sazza is in and interact with her. This might cause a glitch where, after talking to her, you’ll glitch out of the cell. If not, you may have to lockpick your way out.

But if you’re in the Goblin Camp, you have to interact with the body inside the cell to move it away and free the entrance of the escape tunnel.

How to lockpick the prison door in BG3

To pick the prison door’s lock, you must complete the following steps:

  1. Interact with the door to see all available options
  2. Select the lockpicking option.
  3. Then, you must roll a D20 and pass a 15 Sleight of Hand check.
Tip:

Your imprisoned character won’t have Thieve’s Tools, so their chance of succeeding will be slightly lower than that of a character who does. You can switch your control to a character that’s not imprisoned and take them to the gate to lockpick it instead. If you’re playing co-op with another person, your friend can do it for you, too.

How to break out of prison without a fight in BG3

Yes, there is a way to break out of prison without any fights at all! You first need to:

  1. Grab a character from your party that is within the jail cell.
  2. Use them to smash boxes within the jail cell.
  3. A guard will come over to investigate.
  4. They will open the gate.
  5. Convince the guard with a persuasion check that you are not supposed to be in prison.
  6. You have successfully escaped without fighting!

How to find your belongings after being jailed in Baldur’s Gate 3

Your items will be in two chests before your cell after you escape. Open the chests and grab everything. One chest holds your items, meaning all the items your character had on them before being jailed, and the other contains the “evidence,” which is the item you tried to steal. Ironically, you can steal it again from the chest.

Tip:

Make sure the character interacting with the chest is the one that was imprisoned. Otherwise, you will have to move your items around between them.

To re-equip your items, open your Character Sheet and equip your character with the items you had before being caught. If you don’t, you will be bare-handed and half-naked in your next fight. But that could be a fun challenge, too.

What happens after you escape prison in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Nothing happens after you get out of jail in Baldur’s Gate 3 unless you’re seen by whoever locked you away. In that case, the following sequence of events occurs:

  1. The person who recognizes you will start a dialogue, which gives you three options:
  • Return to your cell voluntarily.
  • Convince them to let you go.
  • Fight them. You probably don’t want to be locked away again, and fighting is only an option if you feel your party is strong and you can afford the story consequences of it.
Tip:

To talk your way out of it, you have to pass a 15 Charisma check with either Persuasion or Intimidation.
– If you pass, you’re free to go, and nobody will bother you again—you will even keep the item you stole.
– If you fail, you’re sent back to the cell and can try to escape again.

Once you’ve either passed or failed the dialogue check, you can mosey on out of the prison or attempt another jailbreak.

Escaping from prison can be tricky, but with the right tools, a glitch, or even a bare-handed attack, you can break out of prison in BG3 in no time.
