How to use the Web Line in Spider-Man 2

Don't slack on those Web Line Takedowns.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the Web Line is a gadget that you first get during the Bad Guys On The Block Main Story Mission. This is basically the first stealth mission in the game, where you use various takedowns for the first time, including some that use the Web Line.

You get a brief tutorial in using the Web Line when it first becomes available, but once the game stops holding your hand, it’s not so easy to use it effectively. It can be difficult to know where to start a Web Line and where to aim it, and there are a few details about using Web Lines that the tutorial doesn’t mention.

So, here’s a complete guide to using the Web Line in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, including how to do Web Line Takedowns and use it to get the Slack Line Trophy.

How the Web Line works in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

The first thing you’ve got to do with the Web Line is aim it. So, just like you aim various other tools and skills in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, hold down L2 and use the right stick to point your aiming reticle at the spot you want to hit. During the tutorial, you won’t be able to move the reticle, but later on, you will. Remember that when you shoot the Web Line, it’ll create a tightrope between you and the point you’re aiming at.

Shoot a Web Line at the spot you’re aiming at by tapping Triangle with L2 still held down. A tightrope made of web will appear and Spider-Man will automatically step onto it. Use the left stick to move along the Web Line.

How to do a Web Line Takedown in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

If you’ve created your Web Line above an enemy, and they don’t know that you’re there, you can then perform a Web Line Takedown on them. Just walk along the Web Line until you’re directly above them, then press Square to perform a Web Line takedown. You’ll cocoon them in a web, and leave them hanging helplessly from your Web Line.

After you perform your first Web Line takedown, the game will prompt you to “Use the Web Line Gadget to create your own takedown opportunities” and it immediately gets a lot more difficult. At this point, I actually had more difficulty with the “zip to point” skill than with the Web Line itself. It’s important to start your Web Line from a concealed position above your target, but I kept zipping to a different point from the one I was aiming at. In that particular room, the entrance (i.e. the big hole in the wall) is an ideal starting spot for your first “free play” Web Line takedown.

There’s a Hunter looking at a monitor in front of you. Shoot a Web Line above her, about halfway up the wall.

Walk out onto the Web Line until you’re directly above her and look down. In the bottom-left corner of the screen, you’ll be prompted to tap Square to perform a takedown. It actually says “Perch Takedown” for me this time, but that’s fine. A Web Line Takedown is basically a Perch Takedown using a Perch you created yourself.

Press Square as prompted, and you’ll perform your first “free play” Web Line Takedown.

To get the Slack Line Trophy, you have to “Stealth takedown 25 enemies in stealth from the Web Line”, which means doing the kind of takedown I already described over and over again. The one you do during the tutorial counts, so you just have to do 24 more. To get the Trophy as quickly as possible, use the Web Line at every opportunity. You can use it in any situation where you’re above enemies that aren’t aware of you, and there are lots of those, mainly in Main Story missions, but also in some Crime Scenes and various other scenarios. Bear in mind that you can shoot a new Web Line from an existing Web Line, so you can create a whole network of Web Lines above your enemies.
