It has been nearly a year since No Rest for the Wicked was released in early access. Since then, multiple major updates have reset player character progress. This can also lead to some uncommon data corruption issues, which is par for the course with early access.
If you’re looking for your local data or backup saves, here is the save file location for No Rest for the Wicked on PC.
No Rest for the Wicked save file location for Steam
You can find the save files for No Rest for the Wicked at the following location on PC:
C:\Users\[Windows Username]\AppData\LocalLow\Moon Studios\NoRestForTheWicked\DataStore
There are a few subfolders in DataStore, and from what I can tell, each of these holds the save files for the specific major update. That’s why I recommend sorting the DataStore folder by date, so you can see the latest ones at the top. Inside the string of numbers, which for my case is 22555, you’ll find individual DAT files for the account, character and realm.
To make your life easier, you can just make a backup of the NoRestForTheWicked folder if you need to. I did notice that the backup files are only created for my older save files, not the new ones.

No Rest for the Wicked also supports Steam Cloud on Steam, so you can follow progress on a different device. It’s verified for the Steam Deck as well, but performance is a bit mixed. You can also share the title with your Steam family, which is a bit rare for early access releases.
Do major updates reset progress in No Rest for the Wicked?
Yes, major updates like the recent “Breach” will reset the progress of No Rest for the Wicked. This means your characters and realms will be deleted, and you will have to start fresh.
This is only restricted to the early access period, of course, but it’s something you should be aware of if you’re planning to invest a lot of time in the game.
If this development model bothers you, I highly recommend waiting for the 1.0 release, which I expect to come out later this year or early 2026. The game still has a long way to go, and the reception for the latest update wasn’t exactly the most positive.
