Magic: The Gathering keeps things fresh with the constant release of sets (or expansions) featuring new and reprinted cards to collect and play. A new set release is one of the most exciting events in MTG, so you may be wondering when the next set lands.
As of right now, Wizards of the Coast has given us a look at what’s in store through to 2026, but not everything is accounted for just yet. Here’s what we know about every upcoming MTG release and when you might be able to get your hands on a pack or two (both on paper and digitally through MTG: Arena).
All upcoming MTG expansion release dates and details
Latest release: Bloomburrow (BLB)
- Bloomburrow release date: Aug. 2, 2024
- Codename: Rugby
Bloomburrow arrived in MTG in early August 2024, with cards and characters all taking the form of different animals from owls and frogs to rabbits, mice, and more. Bloomburrow was iconic because it saw the first Standard rotation in over three years thanks to the format change.
Duskmourn: House of Horror (DSK)
- Duskmourn: House of Horror release date: Sept. 27, 2024
- Codename: Swimming
We got a first look at Duskmourn: House of Horror back in June, with the set seeing players take on a mystery with themes inspired by horror media of the ’80s and ’90s. This set follows Bloomburrow and launches in late September.
Foundations (FDN)
- Foundations release date: Nov. 15, 2024
Foundations is an evergreen set targeted at both new players to the TCG as well as veterans looking to play across numerous formats. Described as an “evolved version of a Core Set,” WotC is hoping Foundations acts as a great way to reintroduce players to the game or welcome new players, with plenty of reprints and a Standard-legal set of cards.
Innistrad: Remastered
- Innistrad: Remastered release date: Jan., 2025
We’ll be returning to Innistrad in early 2025 as part of a set of four planar returns in the coming two years. Cards from all four previous Innistrad blocks, including Shadows, Midnight Hunt, and Crimson Vow, will reportedly be back, as well as a few cool newcomers appearing in the special limited run of the set.
“Death Race”
- “Death Race” release date: Feb. 7, 2025
- Codename: Tennis
“Death Race” or “Multiplanar Race” is a set coming in early 2025 that sees characters from across multiple MTG planes battle with a theme around racing. Little more is known at this stage other than designer Mark Rosewater calling it a “travelogue” set.
Return to Tarkir
- Return to Tarkir release date: Q2, 2025
- Codename: Ultimate
We’re going back to Tarkir in 2025 with a “best of both worlds” solution to those begging for the block’s return. Marking the conclusion of the “Dragonstorm Arc” that first began with Bloomburrow, cards from Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir are expected to be back in players’ hands with this set.
“Space opera”
- “Space opera” set release date: Q3, 2025
- Codename: Volleyball
The “Space Opera” set kicks off the next arc beginning in mid-2025. Little is known yet about this set other than it plans to take place in a grand futuristic expanse of outer space.
Return to Lorwyn
- Return to Lorwyn release date: Q4, 2025
- Codename: Wrestling
Two more returns will be made to planes of old in 2025 and 2026, first kicking off with Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. References to Lorwyn and Shadowmoor span multiple sets, so we’re expecting a combination of reprints and new cards here.
Return to Arcavios
- Return to Arcavios release date: Q1, 2026
- Codename: Yachting
I hope fans of Strixhaven are excited as Wizards is planning for a return to the magic school in early 2026. Return to Arcavios is set to include reprints of classic fan favorites as well as an expansion on what we know (and don’t yet know) about the plane and its inhabitants.
“Event set”
- Unknown “event set” release date: Q2, 2026
- Codename: Ziplining
The untitled event set, planned for early to mid-2026, wraps up the last arc in the Metronome storyline. We don’t know much more about this set yet, but stay tuned for more updates!
All other unknown sets
The remaining sets we know about are set to release in Q3 and Q4 2026, with another planned for Q1 2027. Unfortunately, little is known about these sets at this time outside of their codenames (Amsterdam, Berlin, and Cairo).
Interestingly, these codenames differ from the sporting-themed codes of old since we’ve hit the last letter of the alphabet (ziplining), and will now be moving into cities. Check back regularly or after each set release for an update on these dates!
