How to get a Meteorite in Pokémon Go

A special item only Rayquaza can use.

Getting a Meteorite in Pokémon Go isn’t easy as it’s a rare item you can’t obtain while exploring your local neighborhoods. There’s a specific way you can get one, and it’s a hefty requirement if you’re looking to give it to the only Pokémon that can use one: Rayquaza.

The Meteorite won’t always be available. You’ll want to check with the most recent events in Pokémon Go to see if there’s one you can grab. If there’s not, you’ll need to wait until the event rolls around. When you get a Meteorite, you’ll want to give it to a Rayquaza as this Legendary Pokémon needs it to evolve into Mega Rayquaza.

You can only get the Meteorite item by completing a Special Research ticket provided by Niantic or as a reward for an event. These appear occasionally, typically when Mega Rayquaza raids are occurring. The most recent one is during Pokémon Go‘s Adventure Week 2024 event, starting on Aug. 3 at 11am in your local area. Mega Rayquaza raids will appear and a free Special Research quest will be sent to all players who log into the mobile game.

You’ll need to work through the Special Research and clear the steps to earn the Meteorite on your Pokémon Go account. Once you have it, you’ll need to unlock the second attack on your Rayquaza, which does cost Stardust and Rayquaza Candy. After this, you can give them the Meteorite, which teaches them to use the move Dragon Ascent. Rayquaza is the only Pokémon that can learn this attack.

Teaching Rayquaza to use Dragon Ascent unlocks their ability to become Mega Rayquaza. But you still need Mega Rayquaza Energy, and you can only get this from completing Mega Rayquaza Raids or rewards. You’ll want to work with other Pokémon Go players to clear these raids. Mega Rayquaza is not an easy encounter, and you’ll need at least five to six other players to help you beat it. It never hurts to have more, too.

Once the event featuring Mega Rayquaza is over, the chance to get a Meteorite goes away. You’ll need to wait for the next event, where Niantic announces another series of Mega Rayquaza raids. We expect another Special Research task to go out simultaneously, giving players another opportunity to get this item for Rayquaza.
