While drafting the blueprints for each room in Blue Prince, you’ll have to decide between three rooms. Each room has a different purpose and comes with utilities, challenges, and rewards. If you want to master the puzzles of this labyrinthian manor, you need to learn all the map symbols.
Blue Prince map symbols and resources explained
Before drafting a room you should learn what each room can provide you based on the symbols. Some rooms, like the Kitchen and Commissary, are important to unlock early on so you can deal with unforeseen problems.
Symbol | Location | Usage |
Coin | Pantry, Chapel, Observatory. | Coins can be used at the Commissary for items and in the Kitchen to purchase food. You also lose a coin every time you enter the Chapel. |
Gem | Storeroom, Den, and Wine Cellar. | Gems are required to draft certain higher tier rooms with up to three gems as drafting requirements. |
Key | Storerooms and Nooks. | Key are used to open locked doors and to open locked trunks you find in rooms. |
Steps | Bedrooms | You incur a step cost every time you enter and exit a room. You can gain more steps by drafting bedrooms or eating food. |
Food | Dining Room | Once you reach Rank 8, you can find a hearty meal in the Dining Room that restores a lot of steps. |
Puzzle piece | Puzzle rooms with rewards, e.g, Billiard Room, Parlor. | The puzzle piece symbolizes rooms with puzzles in them. These puzzles usually reward Gems, Keys and Coins. |
Gear | Utility Closet | You can interact with the breaker board to enable rooms like the Dark Room and disable/enable the security card system. It also has a hidden puzzle. |
Four leaf clover | Veranda | Entering the Veranda usually gets you a Shovel and makes green rooms likely to have Gems. |
Food for Sale | Kitchen | You can purchase food at the Kitchen to increase your steps. |
Spread Arrows | Rare colored rooms | Drafting these rare rooms spreads items like Coins, Keys, Gems and Fruit across the other rooms you draft. |

Coins, Keys, and Gems are your primary items that you will need to unlock higher-tier rooms. Rooms do not repeat, so make sure to draft them out while planning ahead. If you’re running low on steps, you should look for the steps symbol in bedrooms, but these often don’t lead to other rooms. You can also prioritize puzzle rooms such as the Billiards Room which gives two keys.
