The highly anticipated Gimmighoul Tera Raids have returned to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but the biggest highlight of the event comes with poor odds.
From Aug. 8, Chest Form Gimmighoul Tera Raids ranging from one to five stars will be popping up in Scarlet and Violet to celebrate the Pokémon World Championships (Aug. 16 to 18). The five-star raids come with a very small chance of encountering Shiny Gimmighoul—one in 4,103.05, as pointed out by content creator Austin John Plays.
Players including Serebii’s Joe Merrick were hoping for boosted odds this time around, but we’re unfortunately dealing with the same low Shiny rate as last year’s event.
The main issue here is Shiny Gimmighoul and Shiny Gholdengo are exclusive to these Tera Raid events that have only happened twice since the Gen IX games were released. This makes Gimmighoul one of the rarest Shinies—which is awesome—but the process is long and painful unless you’re blessed with incredible luck.
Let’s just say you want to hunt for a Shiny Gimmighoul during this event. The first step is to find a five-star Gimmighoul raid hidden among the lower-ranked raids. There’s no way to check how many stars a raid has without interacting with the Tera crystal, so you’ll already be spending a decent chunk of time running around looking for five-star raids.
Once you find a Gimmighoul raid, you must start the battle and see if the little ‘mon is Shiny or not. Unfortunately, Gimmighoul’s Shiny variant isn’t super obvious, and you can easily mistake a Shiny for a normal one. If you aren’t confident in whether it’s Shiny, you may want to battle and catch every five-star Gimmighoul you encounter just in case. And that eats up a lot of time between the cut scenes, lag, and chaos that comes with Tera Raids.
That’s why Shiny hunting Gimmighoul requires either a lot of dedication or luck, especially if you’re tackling it alone. An alternative option would be to join a fellow player’s raid if they happen to stumble upon a Shiny Gimmighoul raid before you do.
Even these group raids will be rare and in high demand too though, so there’s no guaranteed way you come out of this Scarlet and Violet event with that tiny Shiny.
