You can get Destiny 2’s Exotic class items from Xûr—if you’re lucky

Finally a good use of my Strange Coins.

Destiny 2 players are getting another source of Exotic class items soon—and without needing to redo Dual Destiny. Xûr, the weekly vendor, will have a chance of bringing those items each week starting at the end of the month, Bungie confirmed today.

Bungie is changing Xûr’s inventory to “make room each week for either an Exotic class item or an Exotic Cipher” starting with next week’s Update 8.0.5.2, Bungie wrote in today’s This Week in Destiny (TWID) blog post. When he does bring the Prismatic-exclusive item, you can buy a random roll for 41 Strange Coins. There doesn’t seem to be a limit to how much you can purchase, based on the wording, though Destiny 2 fans must wait until the update lands to be sure.

Xûr is guaranteed to sell this coveted new item starting on Friday, Aug. 23. This means that, aside from the guaranteed first week, his inventory will depend on RNG (and Bungie’s will to make those elusive items available). You can only buy the Exotic class items from Xûr if you completed Dual Destiny, though, so you can’t use the merchant to skip the mission.

If the merchant doesn’t bring Exotic class items for sale, you can instead buy an Exotic Cipher for 79 Strange Coins. Bungie explicitly said this offering is an account-based, once-off purchase for that week. His inventory is the same for all players on a given week.

While the TWID blog post originally said the new offerings would come in on Aug. 26, Bungie amended the error shortly after publishing the post. An official social media post, however, still lists the incorrect date of Aug. 26 (a Monday) instead of next Friday.

The change to Xûr’s stock is the latest development in a complicated relationship with the acquisition of these items. Each class item has eight traits on each column, so the chance to get the perfect combination you want is one in 64. If you play more than one class, the RNG is even worse.

Early into The Final Shape, Bungie squashed the glitch that awarded two Exotic class items per run of Dual Destiny, provided you played with the same class. While the glitch certainly helped tip the scales, players still had around a three percent chance of getting the roll they wanted on each completion.

Because of this, numerous guardians flocked to The Pale Heart—and did nothing but open chests—to take advantage of a mechanic that increased the (meager) drop rate per chest opened. Some were even using AFK farming macros to obtain those items.

Earlier this month, Bungie removed the escalating chance to obtain Exotic class items from Pale Heart chests, which is now awarded from opening the (much less plentiful) Overthrow chests. This was an evident downgrade not just because of the worse acquisition, but also because guardians already farmed the activity to obtain the Khvostov 7G-0X and advance the litany of post-campaign side quests in The Final Shape.

The change to Xûr’s inventory is a preliminary adjustment, and Bungie has more plans for guardians—even though “they are still early in development and will take some time to get right,” according to the studio.
