‘If I wasn’t a streamer…’: Asmongold’s damning Assassin’s Creed Shadows review as harsh as it gets

Asmongold isn't thrilled about Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has seemingly been criticized by anyone who is bothered to talk about the game. Joining the choir is popular streamer and YouTuber Asmongold, who gave Ubisoft’s upcoming title the most damning of reviews.

Asmongold isn’t one to shy away from sharing his opinion on anything gaming-related, so it was only a matter of time for Assassin’s Creed Shadows to come up. The content creator shared his unflattering thoughts on the double-protagonist action-stealth mashup.

Asmon declared that he would “never ever for a second play this” if he wasn’t a streamer, a conclusion preceded by a short rant dripping with sarcasm: “I legitimately think we’re going through an idiocracy of video games. I cannot wait to play Assassin’s Creed. Every single thing I see about the game just makes me so excited. This game is gonna be so fun. I’m not gonna say fun to play, but it’s gonna be fun to stream.” On the bright side, Asmonglod fans will apparently get a lot of streaming gold from Asmon, thanks to Shadows, so there are some positives to the streamer’s distaste for the game.

This damning assessment of Assassin’s Creed Shadows was inspired by a gameplay clip in which the female protagonist Naoe pulls off a multi-slash move on an enemy. While this is supposed to be a cool and empowering moment for the player, the animation and character movements appear to be so stiff and unimaginative that even a comparison with Metal Gear Revengeance, a game from 2013, made Asmongold sigh in despair from how much better the older animations look.

Asmongold is not alone in criticizing Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ recent gameplay reveals. Fans were also baffled by a clip of the other protagonist Yasuke’s apparent inability to perform arguably the most iconic action in all of Assassin’s Creed—the Leap of Faith, without stumbling to the ground. “Why have an Assassin’s Creed protagonist who can’t do assassin things?” was the primary train of thought on that matter.

It appears that the closer we get to Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ release date, the more criticism there is, particularly on larger and official platforms. That being said, the original gameplay video from which Asmongold pulled the Naoe clip has a three-to-one likes-to-dislikes ratio, with most viewers seemingly enjoying what they see, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
