Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are the latest games released in the over-20-year-old franchise. They offer the best experience on the Nintendo Switch’s hardware.

But sometimes, all longtime fans want is to get back to Pokémon’s roots. Some fans granted that wish by creating a 1999 version of Scarlet and Violet as they would have looked at that time.

The demake is based on the franchise’s second generation, which was initially released on the Game Boy Color in 1999, Gold and Silver.

It shows the protagonist encountering Mela, the “Boss of Team Star’s Fire Crew.” The pixel art transforms her design, but she remains recognizable. Even the music was recreated in a retro style.

Pokémon fans have praised the creation, although some errors were pinpointed for not succeeding in making a perfect immersion into the older games. This includes attacks that don’t suit the Pokémon’s types and other elements that wouldn’t have been included in the original games from this generation.

Another video was shared by creators where they created all the sprites from Paldean Pokémon, a new variant from the Scarlet and Violet games, into the 1999 version. It looks like tremendous work and more fans praised them for that demake.

“The fact that there is fans that basically just gameboy-ify the new games, making them the perfect choice for people who prefer the OG feel of Pokemon, all for free, is one of the neatest things about this universe,” one Reddit comment reads.
