The second season of the Overwatch League began tonight with a grudge match between Philadelphia Fusion and London Spitfire. Since Spitfire took home the first season’s trophy after the grand finals, Fusion started this season with a need for redemption.
Philadelphia won the match with a 3-1 scoreline against London, proving that their offseason preparation was worth the time and effort. It was a stark contrast to the landslide win from London Spitfire during the grand finals last year. Philadelphia were dominant on the second map, Hollywood, and final map, Rialto, where their stellar ultimate coordination and team cooperation was on full display.
“We were doing exactly what we were doing in scrims,” Alberto “neptuNo” González said in the post-match press conference when asked about how their play had changed. While the London Spitfire were able to take one map, Volskaya Industries, Philadelphia’s confidence in their coordination managed to put London on the back foot. But the team is cautious about that confidence.
“Last year we were overconfident sometimes, and that’s not good,” said Fusion DPS Josh “Eqo” Corona. “We are just going to think about what we need to do, analyzing our mistakes.”
One standout player during the match was Fusion’s Isaac “Boombox” Charles, whose Zenyatta play garnered attention during both the Overwatch World Cup, where he played for Team United Kingdom, and this redemption match. But it’s not going to his head.
When asked if he would take the spotlight from New York Excelsior’s Bang “JJoNak” Sung-hyeon, last season’s MVP and fellow Zenyatta main, he had a very simple answer: “No.”
Philadelphia Fusion’s next game is against the Atlanta Reign on Feb. 17 at 3:30pm CT.
