Finland’s Overwatch World Cup team is stacked

The committee picked a ton of Overwatch League and Contenders players.

Overwatch World Cup teams have started to reveal their rosters, starting with Australia and Norway. But Team Finland dropped their list today, and it’s stolen the spotlight. The Finland Overwatch World Cup is packed with talent from both Overwatch League and Overwatch Contenders.

“Our roster has now narrowed down to 12 players of which seven will be picked for the final roster,” Finland’s committee posted on Twitter. “We decided to focus mainly on the Overwatch League and Contenders players, since there are a lot of Finnish talent in those fields.”

From the Overwatch League, Finland tapped Joona “Fragi” Laine from Philadelphia Fusion, Joonas “zappis” Alakurtti and Aleksi “Zuppeh” Kuntsi from Florida Mayhem, Jiri “LiNkzr” Masalin from Houston Outlaws, Timo “Taimou” Kettunen from Dallas Fuel, and Benjamin “BigGoose” Isohanni and Jonas “Shaz” Suovaara from Los Angeles Gladiators.

The rest of the team have been plucked from Overwatch Contenders 2018 season one runners-up Team Gigantti—Roni “LhCloudy” Tilihonen, Richard “rCk” Kanerva, Tuomo “Davin” Leppänen, Petja “Masaa” Kantanen, and Riku “Ripa” Toivanen.

Team Finland placed fourth at the 2016 Overwatch World Cup, but didn’t make it out of groups in 2017.

Finland has consistently housed a healthy competitive Overwatch scene, with plenty of talent pouring out of the country. Finnish Overwatch players will compete in a national tournament held at Assembly Summer in August. It’s likely some of the Contenders will show up at the tournament—Team Gigantti took first during the winter tournament this year.
