Helldivers 2 players beg dev to bring one weapon feature over from original game

Would this be too difficult to implement?

New biomes, weapons, armor, and enemies are frequently added into Helldivers 2 as the Galactic War develops. But OG Helldivers want to see one particular feature return to this war: The weapon upgrade system.

In a July 31 Reddit thread on r/Helldivers, poster tedge081 sparked a discussion with fellow Helldivers when he stated that the weapon upgrade system from the first game should be added to Helldivers 2. In Helldivers, this system allowed you to use Research Points (similar to Samples) as currency to upgrade weapons and Stratagems.

Many responses in the Reddit thread agree with the original poster, with some specifying they want their leftover Requisition Slips to unlock something other than Stratagems. If weapon upgrades aren’t a possibility, OG Helldivers are happy to take a weapon attachment system, as some reminisced about the AMR optic and their desire for new ammo types.

The thread is split between those who want a weapon upgrade system and those who want an attachment system. I say, why not both? Some lean more on the side that the first Helldivers was “close to perfection” and that this version of the Galactic War is “starving for content.” But, the consensus is that weapons should be upgradable like the first game, whether through weekly challenges, like in Call of Duty, or paid for with one of the pre-existing in-game currencies.

Whether a change like this would affect the “design philosophy of the weapon,” as one commenter said, or cause more harm than good to the balance of the game is uncertain, but Helldivers want more RPG elements added to this looter shooter regardless. This isn’t the first we’ve heard about Helldivers wanting more customization options added to Helldivers 2. The player base has demanded there be armor customization in Helldivers 2 since the game’s release in February. Since then, vehicle skins have been added.

Perhaps Command is restricting the Helldivers’ potential on purpose, providing them with the standard version of each weapon only. Set optics, fire modes, and ammo types may be enough to get the job done—for the sake of Super Earth.
