Victor “Punk” Woodley has been one of the top players in Street Fighter V for nearly two years now. But his run at Final Round 2019 included battles against some of the all-time greats.
Over 300 players attended the first event of the 2019 Capcom Pro Tour, and since it was the first Pro Tour event of the year, at least 44 of those entrants were players with notable tournament wins.
Punk made his way into the top 16 rather easily, outplacing legends like Daigo “The Beast” Umehara, Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi, and last year’s Capcom Cup winner, Tsunehiro “gachikun” Kanamori. He entered the top 16 through losers after dropping his only game earlier in the tournament to gachikun.
Punk went on a tear throughout the losers bracket, though, defeating Gustavo “801 Strider” Romero, Justin “JWong” Wong, and Kun “Xian” Ho. He rolled out nine-straight wins, matching up against Yusuke “Momochi” Momochi in the grand finals.
Punk exploded in the finals, too. His ground play completely beat down Momochi’s Zeku with a Karin that looked the best it ever has. He read plays perfectly and forced a bracket reset with a 3-0 series win.
Momochi showed a bit of himself from previous rounds in the bracket reset, but Punk just kept on coming. His mixups weren’t working and almost every whiff was punished hard.
Punk ended it with a 3-1 victory in the reset, earning himself $8,962 and 700 CPT points. The next event will be FV x SEA Major 2019 on March 23 and 24.
