Is Xur selling an Exotic class item this week in Destiny 2? (Aug. 16 to 19)

Fingers crossed for that roll you want.

Xur, Destiny 2’s mysterious merchant, sells all sorts of items when he drops by. Xur can even sell Exotic class items every week starting on Aug. 23, making his new spot in the Tower a nearly required stop over the weekend.

While The Final Shape revamped his inventory and gave him a fixed location in the Bazar, arguably the biggest change to Xur took place as part of an update to improve Exotic class item acquisition. We’ll tell you if Xur is selling an Exotic item this week in Destiny 2—and if it’s worth stopping by his spot on the Tower if he doesn’t have one in stock.

No, Xur isn’t selling an Exotic class item this week, but he’s guaranteed to sell one starting on Aug. 23. That said, here are some items in his inventory that may be worth picking up this week:

ItemTypeCost (Strange Coins)
The Huckleberry Exotic SMG (Kinetic)23
ThunderlordExotic MG (Arc)23
Lumina CatalystCatalyst71
Temptation’s HookCaster Frame sword (Arc)17
Escalation Protocol sets
(for transmog)
Yuga Sundown (Warlock)
Midnight Exigent (Titan)
Abhorrent Imperative (Hunter)
17 each piece

Huckleberry and Thunderlord are worth it if you’re beginning and need reliable weapons, with the former slated for buffs in the future. Caster frames aren’t super popular in the meta, but the roll on Temptation’s Hook is good enough to consider buying if you can spare it. Lumina’s Catalyst also trims some RNG, and the hand cannon is niche but has its uses. The Escalation Protocol sets are somewhat rare, so snag the pieces you need for your guardian’s fashion.

On the flip side, Sunbracers and Heart of Inmost Light can be build-defining, but Xur’s rolls aren’t that good due to a spike in Mobility, so the argument for buying them isn’t strong.

Why can Xur sell Exotic class items in Destiny 2?

The acquisition process for Exotic class items fell short of players’ expectations, in part because of the process itself and partly due to the RNG involved in obtaining specific rolls. There’s a one-in-64 chance of getting any given roll on each class item, which is worsened by the lack of duplicate protection. And even if you get your dream perks on one class, you may have to go back to the start if you have any alts.

As a way to tip the scales a bit, Bungie brought Exotic class items to Xur’s inventory on some occasions, which will have random rolls once purchased. This is an addition to his stock, without removing anything to slot it in (though the previous Wildcard offers will move to a different location in his menu). This is a stopgap, though, and not the be-all and end-all solution.

Will Xur sell Exotic class items every week in Destiny 2?

Although the intergalactic peddler bringing Exotic class items is good news, Xur won’t always have them in stock. His inventory will oscillate between the new, Prismatic-exclusive build items (for 41 Strange Coins each) and a one-off Exotic Cipher (79 Strange Coins).

Even if Xur is selling the Prismatic subclass’ new tool, you must complete the Dual Destiny mission at least once to unlock your Exotic class item before buying it from the merchant.
