Best Smite 2 Gods for beginners

Which gods will you master first in SMITE 2?

When picking a god to play in SMITE 2, there might be too many choices for you to pick from. Not only do you have to select a particular god, but they all fall into niche roles and categories, meaning they have a distinct playstyle.

Some of the gods in SMITE 2 are easier to use (and master) than others too. If you’re new to the game or are even just picking it up after several years, there are notable choices you’ll want to go with that shape as a good way to relearn the basics. If you can learn how to build them right and how to use their abilities, these easier god picks can quickly become incredibly powerful when fighting other players in SMITE 2.

The best beginner gods in SMITE 2

Some of the best gods you can use to get accustomed to SMITE 2 are: Anhur, Anubis, Athena, Fenrir, Kukulkan, Neith, Susano, and Ymir. To start, make sure you’re linking your SMITE and SMITE 2 accounts before playing.

1) Anhur

Anhur is one of the ranged Hunters you can play in SMITE 2. The only complicated combination of attacks you need to worry about with Anhur is lining up the large pillar he summons with his throw; you’ll want to toss enemies into the pillar to stun and slow them. Outside this, he’s relatively straightforward to play, with flexible abilities that benefit from various distinct builds. He’s up there as one of the more accessible gods to master.

2) Anubis

Anubis is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a powerful Mage to start your SMITE 2 journey. The significant disadvantage to him is he’s relatively squishy, like all Mages, which means you might die during the early game. However, as you get closer to the late game and build more lifesteal, it should be much harder for opponents to overtake you. Anubis’ passive lifesteal is a tremendous boon that makes him difficult to take down.

3) Athena

Next, we have Athena, a Guardian. She’s a tanky god who will be at your frontliner, aiding allies in any way she can. Athena is a good choice in SMITE 2 if you want to be a team player. What’s nice is if you struggle to get from one side of the map to the other, you can use her ultimate to zip across, appearing before allies to aid them. It makes her a fantastic Guardian and a solid choice if you want to try this role for the first time.

4) Fenrir

Fenrir is an aggressive jungle character, capable of leaping into a fight and engaging a foe on his terms. The problem is finding a way out if you don’t successfully sneak up on them. Mastering Fenrir means understanding and finding the best opportunity, and it’s the embodiment of playing in the jungle in SMITE 2. Thankfully, he has some lifesteal to make him more challenging to beat, and you can build some tanky items to improve his health and defenses.

5) Kukulkan

If you don’t want to play as Anubis to try your hand at a Mage, Kukulkan is a solid choice. Unlike Anubis, he doesn’t have natural lifesteal, but his attacks are some of the most powerful you can unleash. There’s also an ability in Kukulkan’s kit that makes it easier for him to escape if you need to make a swift exit during a fight. As a Mage, it’ll always be easy to take out a Kukulkan player, but the sheer damage he deals with from his abilities makes it challenging to do so. Anyone who fights you does have to watch their back.

6) Neith

Another Hunter you might want to try is Neith; one of the standard beginning gods of the original SMITE. Her kit is relatively straightforward and gives a good insight into how SMITE 2 works and what you can expect from other gods with more complicated ability kits. What’s also good about her is her global ultimate. With this she can hit any enemy god so long as her allies see them. She can use that to help take down an enemy, or assist someone when they’re trying to escape. She also has a jump can she use to leave an engagement. Neith was a great starter god in SMITE, and the tradition continues in SMITE 2.

7) Susano

Another slightly more complicated jungle god is Susano. Many of his abilities synergize well, and what can make him difficult is how they all work together. You’ll want to keep track of their cooldowns and use them to deal a quick amount of damage against an enemy quickly. But, he has plenty of escape options, meaning he can deal damage to an enemy then escape before they retaliate. Susano takes time to master, but he’s a fantastic god to take that next step to some of the more difficult choices moving forward.

8) Ymir

The final god we want to mention is Ymir. He’s a Guardian who stuns enemies and keeps them blocked behind his ice wall, preventing escape. He’s an excellent crowd control choice who helps allies secure final attacks. After you master his abilities, you can play around with his traditional tanky builds and try to build up more damage, making him a dangerous opponent by himself rather than a conventional Guardian in SMITE 2.
