Riot fire back at LoL players demanding devs make more voice lines for champions

It's not about money.

League of Legends players are demanding more champion voice lines to compensate for what they see as a growing lack of new comics, stories and lore tidbits, but it’s looking unlikely after Riot Games developers knocked back the idea.

There’s rarely a dull moment in the League community, whether it’s people hating specific skins, champion buffs and nerfs, or general changes. Today, the fandom has decided there are simply not enough voice lines in the massive Riot MOBA, especially when compared to how many players can use in archrival title Dota 2.

The calls picked up on Reddit on Oct. 24, with one player suggesting Riot doesn’t do enough to expand its voice catalog—a claim many players soon agreed with.

In particular, players believe voice lines can create a more immersive experience as players can learn more about their favorite champion, which is especially nice when there aren’t too many stories, books, or comic series being released.

There haven’t been many lore drops recently, and fans are itching for more information about their favorite champions, and many claim it shouldn’t be hard to create more.

Some claimed they know the answer: Riot is just trying to save money by not adding anything new to the game if they don’t have to, they suggested.

It was this claim that drew in a Riot developer, Riot Praceo, to quickly rebuff the claim and offer up a more reasonable explanation. According to the League designer, the devs know how much the story means to the community, but long-term research has found voice lines aren’t the best way to deep-dive into lore like some are claiming.

Even worse, the dev added, it actively detracts from gameplay.

This is why Riot does things like the character’s stories, comics, and videos and includes new voice lines when releasing skins. However, Praceo concedes the Riot team haven’t quite found the middle ground to make everyone happy.

So, it’s not that Riot doesn’t care. Instead, it’s because too many League voice lines, especially long ones, haven’t worked in the recent past and likely won’t again.
