Forget the PS5 Pro—now is the perfect time to buy a PS5

The PS5 Pro has finally been introduced—alongside its eye-watering price tag. For those of you who have been on the fence about whether to buy a PS5 or wait for the PS5 Pro, I’m here to tell you: Buy that PS5.

There’s never been a better time to buy a PS5—and your wallet will thank you.

Grab a discount, instead

When new hardware is revealed, it’s almost a certainty that the price of its predecessor will drop. It might not happen today or tomorrow, but certainly in the run-up to the new console’s launch—if not shortly after. We saw it with the PS4 and PS4 Pro around the PS5’s release as retailers look to shift their stock of the older models to make way for the new boy in town.

The best part of the PS5 Pro release date, much like the PS5, is that it launches in November—even better, in early November. So, you have some time between now and then to decide if you want to spend $700 on a PS5 Pro (and fight the crowds for stock) or to finally get a PS5.  

If you land on buying a PS5, it’s a great time to do so. That November release date is important because it’s just a few weeks before Black Friday when, historically, console deals are available in abundance. So, while everyone else is enjoying their PS5 Pro (or crying over their lack of one), you can pick up a discounted PS5—maybe even as part of a bundle—with deals likely even better now that the PS5 is technically old news.

You’ll likely be able to pick up games at a discount, too, with titles like Alan Wake 2, Demon’s Souls, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 set to receive a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” patch, which means you can play their upgraded versions for free if you decide to pick up a PS5 Pro in the future (when it’s cheaper).

PS5 games still look great and many developers aren’t even using the PS5’s capabilities yet, with several new releases still releasing for last-gen consoles. While the PS5 Pro has an impressive list of compatible games, it could be a while before we see more third-party games joining that lineup, so it’s worth holding off to see how that games list shakes out.

Don’t count the PS5 out

Let’s not beat around the bush: That PS5 Pro price tag is ridiculous. Unless you’re clamoring for that bigger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling, the PS5 is still impressive and worth picking up—especially if that price tag drops soon.

But, hey, I’m not your mother. If you want to join the scuffle for a PS5 Pro, go ahead. But if that PS5 is now calling your name, keep an eye on those Black Friday deals.
