PS5 Pro is the ‘most powerful console’ Sony’s ever built—and has an eye-watering price tag to match

The mid-generation upgrade has arrived.

An upgraded PlayStation 5 model is officially on the way. The suped-up console dubbed the PS5 Pro is set to release before the end of year, Sony announced today.

PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny hosted a nine-minute presentation revealing the system with improved graphical specs from the base console, including a larger GPU, advanced ray-tracing, and AI-driven upscaling to offer fidelity-mode graphical quality without sacrificing frames-per-second performance.

The increased FPS without sacrificing quality is available in select games, but Cerny says the PS5 Pro is “the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” boasting all of the upgrades from the base console. The new version does not include a disc drive or a stand, however.

Games that are enhanced by PS5 Pro will have a unique “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label attached. This includes titles like Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.

“Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro,” Sony said. “This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.”

The PS5 Pro is set to launch on Nov. 7 and is priced at a shocking $699, a big increase from the PS5 Slim’s $499 price tag, which includes a disc drive and base stand within the package itself. Pre-orders begin on Sept. 26.
