How to use Tripwires in Escape from Tarkov

A little trap, big explosion.

In Battlestate Games’ ultra-realistic first-person shooter Escape from Tarkov, there are many ways to eliminate your foes, whether they are real players or AI combatants. There is, however, one way to kill any enemies that are unaware of your master plans, especially if you’re willing to be patient: Tripwires.

Tripwires are explosive little traps you can place in a multitude of ways, catching players who aren’t as careful with where they’re running. They do, however, require some time to set up, and need to be unlocked from the traders before you can set up your deadly strategies alongside your friends.

Here is how to use Tripwires in Escape from Tarkov‘s latest patch.

To unlock the ability to buy Tripwire installation kits from Jaeger, you must progress through his various tasks until you’ve completed the Rough Tarkov quest and the Every Hunter Knows This quest from Jaeger. Once you’ve completed these two quests, you’ll be able to purchase Tripwire installation kits from Jaeger for 38,812 roubles each.

You’ll only need one kit to set down Tripwires in the game, but take care—you and your allies can easily trip your own traps if you aren’t careful. Just keep in mind where you’ve set your traps, test all of your settings, and prepare for a quick fight.

How to use Tripwires in Escape from Tarkov

To use a Tripwire in Escape from Tarkov, equip your grenade and hold it in your hand. Instead of throwing it, however, press the B key to connect the grenade to the Tripwire, and look at the ground. With the Tripwire installation kit in your inventory, a small indicator should appear where the first part of your trap will be placed.

After you’ve placed the first piece of your tripwire, there should be another stick with the grenade attached that you can place down in order to complete your trap. When placed, you should see a string that connects both sticks together, although the length of the trap is not that long, so be smart about where you place your trap.

Tip:

Make sure to place your tripwires in high traffic areas, such as staircases and choke points for exfils, but also ensuring you have an exit plan for you and your team if no enemies activate the traps. The worst thing to do would be to accidentally activate your own traps.

You’ll know your trap has been sprung when you hear a relatively loud click and snap sound before the grenade goes off. There is, however, a bit of time for your victim to run away from its immediate kill zone, so get ready to finish off any stragglers that managed to dive for cover.
