Splyce earns $2.6 million in latest funding round

Esports organization Splyce has closed a $2.6 million funding round led by The Ledger Group, according to ESPN.

Other investors include former Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace and former New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper, Spylce told ESPN. Splyce confirmed the funding round on Twitter this morning.

It was reported in April that The Ledger Group threw in $1.5 million in funding, and will rebrand to OverActive Media to better serve its esports investments, Askott Entertainment and Enthusiast Gaming, as well as its new Splyce investment. First Serve Partners rounds out the funding. World Peace and Harper came aboard with First Serve, ESPN said.

Splyce current fields teams in League of Legends, Call of Duty, Halo, Rocket League, StarCraft 2, Smite, and Paladins. Spylce is looking to secure a franchising slot in the European League of Legends Championship Series, with the deadline for applications closing on July 1 for the first season in 2019. The organization has been a part of the EU LCS since October 2015.

The League of Legends team recently signed a sponsorship deal with sports retailer Foot Locker for the EU LCS Summer Split. It’s Foot Locker’s first investment in the esports space, as with many of the investors in the new funding round. Foot Locker is expected to support the roster “in both lifestyle and performance” needs.
