“We said from the beginning that we are building to compete,” Atlanta Esports Ventures president Paul Hamilton said in a statement. “We chose a name that reflects that intention. We want to engage directly with Atlanta’s passionate esports community and the city as a whole.”

Atlanta Reign’s logo is inspired by a royal crest, with a red phoenix. It’s a nod to Atlanta’s city seal and “to new beginnings,” the organization said. Naturally, the phoenix has a crown “to complement the regal theme of the team’s name. “With these elements put together, the logo paints a picture reflective of Atlanta, indicating work ethic, reinvention, and excellence,” an Atlanta Reign representative said in the press release.

In September, Atlanta Reign appointed Brad Rajana, formerly of NRG Esports and Selfless Gaming, as head coach. Other staff for the Atlanta team include Dimitri Couturet as assistant coach, Cas van Andel as player development coach, Danny Mychakov as data analyst, and Jeong Dong-min as translator. The full roster has not been announced.

Atlanta Esports Ventures was created as a partnership between Cox Enterprises and Province, Inc. The organization was announced in 2018 as one of the eight new expansion teams joining the Overwatch League for season two. Atlanta Reign and the seven other expansion teams will join the founding teams when season two begins on Feb. 14 at Blizzard Arena Los Angeles in Burbank, California.

“Above all, we are looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish,” Hamilton said. “We are building a strong organization with a singular focus on winning long term.”
