How to get the Death Stench armor in Monster Hunter Wilds

A hard armor to craft.

The Death Stench armor is one of the best and most difficult secret armor sets to get in Monster Hunter Wilds. It’s a hard set to craft because the process isn’t direct, and the materials needed are rare.

Here are all the materials you’ll need to craft the full Death Stench armor set:

  • 5 Sinister Cloth
  • 3 Wingdrake Hide+
  • 3 Quality Bone
  • 2 Colossal Bone
  • 2 Herbivore Carapace

The Death Stench armor cannot be crafted with only traditional materials you can break off or carve out from monsters. Instead, the first and most important material you need to get to craft the armor set is the Sinister Cloth.

You can only acquire this special material from NPCs. There are two ways of getting the SInister Cloth. The first way is to speak to a village NPC called Murtabak in the Windward Plains. Doing this will prompt the Material Retrieval feature, which will have him collect the item for you whenever he goes on expeditions. Select the item, and if you’re lucky, Murtabak will find some on his first try.

The second method of acquiring Sinister Cloth is trading for it with specific NPCs, namely the Wudwud Gawdygog and Kilama. You can find Kilama in Kunafa. However, she rarely has the item. When she does, she’ll ask for a special item called Windward Aloe in exchange.

You can find Windward Aloe in the Windward Plains. It is dropped by the Giant Windward Succulent, which can be found during the Great Windward Aloe Emergence event. A notification will pop up when the event begins. When it starts, you can then find the Succulent on your map.

Gawdygog, on the other hand, can be found in the Scarlet Forest among the Wudwuds. In exchange for Sinister Cloth, he will ask for several Ancient Wyvern Coins, which are special items in the game. The number of coins he’ll ask for depends on what you need, and getting the Sinister Cloth will require tens of coins.

To get Wyvern Coins, you need to find some Curioshell Crabs. These crabs can be found in area eight of the Scarlet Forest and area 14 of the Windward Plains. The Crabs are golden and move quickly, but can be caught with your net if you’re fast enough. You can also get coins from them by killing them if you can’t be bothered to catch them.

You can talk to Nata once you’ve finished the main story to collect the items from several NPCs without having to go to them directly. You can rest at your tent to pass a day forward and check back afterward to see if they have the item for you.
