When will Minecraft update 1.21 release?

It's going to be awhile.

Major Minecraft updates are not a common occurrence, so whenever a new one is unveiled, players eagerly look forward to having new content to explore—as is the case with the impending 1.21 update.

Mojang announced Minecraft 1.21 at the Minecraft Live 2023 event, which ran on Oct. 15, 2023, so you might now be wondering when you can actually expect to see this update arrive.

Does the Minecraft 1.21 update have a release date?

The Minecraft 1.21 update does not have any official release date just yet.

Mojang used to plan release dates far in advance, but it announced a permanent change to its update system at the Minecraft Live 2022 event after being unable to deliver features it had previously promised. The devs now reveal parts of future updates slowly over time rather than showcasing all of them up front and being unable to meet expectations.

Because of this, it’s probably going to be quite a while before the devs share an official release date for the 1.21 update.

When is Minecraft 1.21 coming out?

Although Minecraft’s next major update has not received an official release date just yet, Mojang has said 1.21 will officially launch sometime in mid-2024.

Based on past updates, we can probably expect to see 1.21 release in the summer of 2024. The last update, which was 1.20, was released on June 7, 2023, so a possible 1.21 release timeline based on this and what Mojang has said is around June or July 2024.

Considering Minecraft 1.19 also released on June 7, 2022, there’s certainly a decent chance Minecraft 1.21 could retain the same date and launch on June 7, 2024, but this is only speculation based on the time frame Mojang provided and the release dates of past updates.

Does the Minecraft 1.21 update have a name?

The Minecraft 1.21 update doesn’t have a name just yet, and it’s likely to remain unnamed until the official release is closer.

Minecraft 1.20 got its name on March 2, 2023, but it wasn’t until May 26, 2023, that Mojang actually revealed the release date. Based on this, a name reveal for 1.21 might occur sometime fairly early on in 2024, followed by a release date reveal just before the middle of the year.

The themes of the 1.21 update so far include crafting and combat, so unless any other major features are announced later on, the name will likely tie in with what has already been unveiled for Minecraft’s next big update.
