G2 Esports’ triumphant victory at MSI 2019 remains one of the most iconic moments in Western League of Legends history. Half a decade later, star mid laner Caps has pulled back the curtain on what made that roster so dominant.
“All of us [G2] were very good individually, I think it just clicked from day one… I think we had very similar views on the game. It actually helped a lot that Perkz was a mid laner. I think when I talk to mid laners, a lot of them tend to think the same way,” Caps said in an interview with Spanish co-streamer Skain. “With us joining the team back then, we had a lot of the same ideas on how we wanted to play the game and we saw the game being played out, which helped us have a very good direction.”

G2 carved their legacy through a brand of calculated chaos that defied conventional play. They were known for their unorthodox drafts and fearless, high-risk strategies. The squad consistently leveraged their aggressive style to defeat traditionally dominant Asian teams. This bold approach not only led them to clinch the West’s only major international title in recent memory at MSI 2019 but also cemented Caps’ place as one of the most influential players.
According to Caps, the process has changed now to proven picks from the “chaotic” playstyle because some of them backfired while others yielded results. After the iconic roster disbanded, Caps reflected that he wanted to swap to the AD Carry position to let Perkz stick to the roster, even though he didn’t like the role. Perkz later joined Cloud9 in the North American region.
Despite continuing their domestic dominance in the LEC, G2 have never quite been able to recapture the MSI 2019 run. While trophies piled up on home soil, the elusive alchemy of individual brilliance and perfect team synergy that defined their international breakthrough has remained just out of reach for the squad.
