Logitech G309 wireless gaming mouse review: Tiny, graceful, AA battery-powered precision aiming

Yet another incredible option when it comes to wireless gaming.

The latest addition to Logitech’s family of gaming peripherals is here. The G309 wireless gaming mouse looks to improve on the G305—and from hands-on experience, it does.

While it’s not as flashy as the RGB-enabled mice the company already boasts, the G309 offers very solid performance in a tiny package built for those with minimal desk space, those who travel often, or gamers who want one less wire in their setup.

Swift and affordable

The G309 is $79.99, which is great for any wireless mouse these days, let alone one built for gaming by a well-known company like Logitech. That alone makes it worthy of attention, but its performance makes it one to keep an eye on for sure.

The mouse comes in black or white to fit either colorway of your setup, but when it comes to gaming, it’s more than just easy on the eyes. It’s easy to use and quick to adjust to, also, and I found myself picking up and using it in games I’ve been playing for years without much of a hassle.

I did, however, find issue with the bare minimum amount of buttons on the G309. It comes with the normal left and right buttons, two side buttons, the scroll wheel, and a DPI switch.

Logitech’s LIGHTFORCE switches make for a very satisfying click performance, with strong, instant feedback that’s not overly loud. You’d never be able to guess it’s wireless and powered by a single AA battery.

It just keeps on going

Speaking of the AA battery, I used the G309 for both work and gaming for over a week and it remained at 100 percent battery within Logitech’s G Hub app. I feel like this thing will take quite a while to die, and on a source of power that’s been used for decades, that’s just wild to me.

In a press briefing with Logitech, the company said you can expect to change out the AA battery around once a year. So far, based on my usage and how often I use my PC, that seems about right.

If AA batteries aren’t your thing, you can also pick up Logitech’s Powerplay wireless charging system, which is a mousepad you can charge the mouse on while you play or leave it to charge when away.

With both USB dongle wireless and Bluetooth capability, setup is easy and quick and you can get right into gaming with no problem at all. But even as a wireless mouse for non-gamers, this one is worth the pick-up.

Super light speed

The G309 uses Logitech’s “LIGHTSPEED” wireless, and that’s an apt description. This thing is both light and fast, and incredibly small. In fact, it’s a bit too small for my liking, and I don’t have especially large hands. Avoid this one if you’ve got some big mitts, but if not, it should be a great fit.

The mouse also fits into Logitech’s existing ecosystem well thanks to the G Hub app, which lets you control features like DPI sensitivity and curated presets for different kinds of games.

And with a unified USB receiver, you can use both a wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard with just one USB port. With ports a hot commodity in any PC build, or even better for when you’re traveling, this is just a huge plus. My USB hub is already quite clogged up, so using one port for both a mouse and keyboard frees one up for another peripheral—and for that, I am grateful.
