The new, special 30th Anniversary editions of Sony’s PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro are out—or at least they were for a little while before they were swept up in mere seconds. Now, scalpers are already putting them up for sale on eBay at wildly marked up prices.
Thus, the already sold-out digital PlayStation 5 30th Anniversary edition ended up marked up by 100 percent and is selling for $999 and more on eBay. The Pro variant, however, originally priced at $999 itself, is now going for upwards of $6,500 on eBay, though I’ve seen somewhat sketchy listings breaching even that upper barrier. Hell, even the controllers are being marked up and sold at drastically higher prices, and the whole ordeal looks scarily similar to the initial release of PlayStation 5 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 30th anniversary version of the DualSense controller goes for more than twice its base price, while its EDGE version can be picked up for the same price of a regular PlayStation 5 console (around $500). Scalpers have been known to abuse the reselling market, particularly during times of low supply, and since this is a limited, special-occasion release, it’s no that we’re seeing prices as wild as these.
For those out of the loop, Sony opened the pre-orders for the 30th Anniversary bundles of PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 pro, recolored and tweaked to reflect the look of Sony’s iconic, original PlayStation. They are being released to celebrate the 30th birthday of the first PlayStation, initially released on Dec. 3, 1994. It housed numerous franchises that persist to this day, including Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy, among many, many others. It sold over 100 million units to date and is one of the best-selling consoles of all time.
