Is Fortnite coming back to iOS?

iOS players can finally breathe a sign of relief.

After five years of legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, the free-to-play battle royale is finally set to return to the iOS App Store in the United States.

In August 2020, Epic Games added a direct payment option in Fortnite on iOS, bypassing Apple’s in-app purchase system to avoid paying their 30 percent commission. Violating Apple’s App Store guidelines, the company removed Fortnite from its store as a measure. Epic responded with a lawsuit, stating that the company has been running a monopoly and violating antitrust laws.

According to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s X post, Fortnite is coming out for iOS’s App Store “next week.” He posted this on May 1, which could mean the game should be available to download in the U.S, starting May 8.

In Europe, thanks to the Digital Markets Act, which forced Apple to allow third-party app stores, the game returned in 2024. Similarly, in Brazil, the developer has already announced on X that the game will be coming back in July 2025.

While the case is a landmark judgment over digital monopolies and should allow more developer freedom on iOS, it should be great news for mobile players, who had to resort to other ways to play the popular free-to-play title on their mobile devices. Apart from those three countries, players in other regions will still have to play the game on other platforms and wait for it to be available in the App Store in the near future.
