A mysterious rune has appeared in Fortnite: Battle Royale over a plate at Loot Lake’s metal hatch today. It was spotted soon after the week eight challenges were revealed, and it seems to have changed nothing in the area or the island by itself. There are four other similar slots on the hatch.
This is one of the runes data miners found in the v8.40 update game files yesterday. When they revealed all of them, it was unclear what would make them appear and where they would be. Some other information these same people found indicated that these runes could be in the snow biome for some reason, but now it seems more likely that the other four runes that were revealed with this one will appear on the other slots that are still empty.

There are no clues about what will happen if all five runes appear on the hatch. Most likely, they’ll make it open and reveal what’s inside, which remains a mystery for now. What we know is that area is where the mysterious purple cube Kevin exploded in season six before turning Loot Lake into Leaky Lake, so we’d guess it has something to do with the cube’s powers.
Players saw the cube burn similar runes in the ground in season six, so this new rune in Loot Lake could somehow be tied to its powers. We can expect the other four runes to appear over the next few days since we’re approaching the end of season eight and the beginning of season nine. What we’re seeing in Loot Lake could be the start of the lead-up to the next season.
We’ll be on the lookout for more runes appearing on the hatch, as well as trying to figure out their possible effects on Loot Lake and the surrounding areas.
