Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 could potentially be the crown jewel of France’s video game development industry, as it slowly but surely treads along the path of becoming the best-rated RPG of all time.
The game, being a JRPG, contains some traditional elements of the genre’s design, including difficulty options for maximum accessibility. Though it takes a few pages out of the Souls books, difficulty isn’t one of them, so here’s everything you need to know about changing and setting the difficulty in Clair Obscur.
How to set the difficulty in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

Right when you start a game, you will be offered to choose your preferred difficulty, with the options being Story, Expeditioner, and Expert.
The difficulties are described in the following manner:
- Story: Easy combat, meant for players who wish to enjoy the game’s narrative and not have to deal with fighting. The enemies have low damage, and you can parry their attacks easily.
- Expeditioner: The game’s intended difficulty offers a balance between challenges and narratives. Enemies have regular damage, while Dodging and Parrying is harder but not impossible.
- Expert: The game’s ultimate difficulty setting. Enemy damage is buffed, Dodge and Parry windows are narrower, and a strong command of real-time gameplay is necessary.
No matter which difficulty you choose, the game still allows you to change it while in the game and outside of combat. To do so, simply go to the game’s Settings and then the Gameplay tab, which is where you should see a “Game Difficulty” setting that you can change to whatever suits you at the time. You cannot do this mid-fight, so cheesing bosses is a no-go. Well, at least not until they beat you and push you out of combat.
