The opening moments of Black Myth: Wukong are cinematic and create a wonderful picture, but they also leave you wondering who you’re controlling as the main character.
Sun Wukong—also known as the Monkey King—is a mythical monkey with supernatural powers superseding many other deity-like figures. Black Myth: Wukong tells the tale of Wukong and how he rebels against the Celestial Court in a near-comical act of defiance.
Ultimately, the warrior succumbs to the overbearing power of cumulative forces stronger than he, causing many players to question if Black Myth‘s journey has you controlling Wukong or someone else entirely.
Who is the main character in Black Myth Wukong?
You play as The Destined One in Black Myth: Wukong, and unless someone can tell me otherwise, I don’t think Wukong is the main character.
Wukong is encased in stone by the Celestials, and the remnants of his former self now belong to six Relics scattered about the land. It’s prophesized that a chosen monkey—The Destined One—has the power to seek out the Relics and rise against the Celestial Court.
The main character you control initially does not share Wukong’s initial abilities used in the tutorial. They don’t talk or possess the boisterous charisma of Wukong, and this is only the beginning of our investigative hunt.
A cutscene plays out shortly before we take control of the Destined One saying, “And so ends the last tale of Sun Wukong.” Furthermore, the Keeper of the Black Wind (who appears from the first Shrine) says your character is “his spitting image”—suggesting we look like Wukong, but aren’t the warrior in question.
We know for sure The Destined One is who we control in Black Myth: Wukong, but there are serious question marks about the true identity of this figure.
