How to complete the Old Rattle Drum quest in Black Myth Wukong

The quest can easily be missed if you don't pay attention.

The Old Rattle Drum quest is one of the many NPC quests in Black Myth: Wukong structured similarly to FromSoftware’s Souls titles. The key item itself is easy to find, but many players end up missing the rest of the story, so here’s our Old Rattle Drum quest guide.

To start and complete the quest, you will need a hidden item and to travel across several locations in the Yellow Wind Ridge area of Black Myth: Wukong‘s Chapter Two. There is a ton of fighting to be done, so before you venture into trying to clear it, prepare accordingly.

Step One: Get the Old Rattle Drum item from Tiger’s Acolyte

To obtain this secret item and begin the quest itself, you will need to clash with the Tiger’s Acolyte, who is located on a bridge near the Yellow Wind Formation, Windrest Bridge Shrine. If you haven’t already, you can reach it by going from Sandgate Village, Valley of Despair Shrine, navigating through the cave to its left, and passing a crack in the stone.

From the Windrest Bridge Shrine, proceed through the small village up the hill until you reach a big bridge with a massive gate, which is where the Tiger’s Acolyte stands waiting. Defeating him grants you the Old Rattle Drum item, allowing you to start the quest. The Windrest Hamlet Shrine also lies just before the Acolyte’s bridge.

Step Two: Head back to the Windrest Hamlet

After you’ve defeated the Tiger’s Acolyte and obtained the Old Rattle Drum item, head back to the small village you just passed to reach his bridge. Navigate through the village until the screen turns black and white and a child starts speaking to you, asking you to show it the Old Rattle Drum. Walk around until you are able to use the item itself and fight the enemies that emerge.

Step Three: Head to the Valley of Despair

Return to the Sandgate Village, Valley of Despair Shrine and enter through the massive two gates to its right. If you haven’t already, you will need to obtain the two key items required to open the gates, the Keenness of Tiger and Sternness of Stone, dropped by the Tiger Vanguard and Stone Vanguard bosses.

Keep in mind that, if you really must, you can also reach this location from the Rock Clash Platform by navigating through the area and sliding down the sand to the Windseal Gate Shrine.

When approaching from the Valley of Despair side, you will reach a hut on your right that has a minor courtyard under it. Go near it, and you should again see a black and white screen and a child attempting to speak with you, asking you to once more use the Old Rattle Drum. Do so and fight any emerging enemies.

Last Step: Move to the Sandgate Village

You can again start from the Valley of Despair Shrine and backtrack to the village through the gates up the stairs behind you. Once up there, head forward and then take a left past some ranged enemies until you reach the courtyard where you fought the Earth Wolf boss. This area can also be accessed from the Sandgate Entrance Shrine if you unlocked the shortcut.

To the left of the courtyard is a big shrine, and to its side a small pathway leading to a place full of bones with a well. A cutscene should play when you use the drum, with a boy calling you to descend down the well itself. Down there is the Mad Tiger boss, which you can now fight for a solid reward.
