Tiny, tiny part of a gig NYT Mini Crossword answer and hints

Not that kind of gig.

Oh, NYT Mini Crossword, you cheeky devil. The New York Times can sometimes trick you and send you in the entirely wrong direction, and that’s exactly what it did with me in the “tiny, tiny part of a gig” clue today.

  • Hint 1: It begins with the letter “B.”
  • Hint 2: It rhymes with “might.”
  • Hint 3: Nothing to do with concerts.
  • Hint 4: A unit of data.

Stop right there! I’m just about to reveal the answer.

Correct, the answer to three down in the July 29 NYT Mini Crossword is “BYTE.” I thought this clue was about concerts, not computers—silly me. A byte is a unit of data that’s eight binary digits long. A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. My laptop has a terabyte of storage, and I can only imagine how many bytes that equates to.

Did you know?

German-American computer scientist Werner Buchholz coined the term byte in 1956. Maybe he was hungry that day.

Tiny, tiny part of a gig NYT Crossword Mini difficulty rating

I struggled with this, but I can’t imagine everyone had the same problem. If you’re into computers and have hard drives, floppy disks, and memory sticks on your mind, this NYT Mini Crossword clue was probably a piece of cake. No matter how difficult you found it, I’m giving this a four out of five on the difficulty rating scale.
