Can you speak French? Because I can’t. I actually studied French in school but totally failed. I remember how to say table, hello, bread, and a couple of other things, but I definitely didn’t know the French word before a maiden name—until now. I have the answer to the April 11 New York Times Mini Crossword.

French word before a maiden name – NYT Mini Crossword answer
Still don’t know? The answer to six across in the April 11 NYT Mini Crossword is “NEE.”
I’m going to be honest with you here. I didn’t know the answer either. I had to do some research before writing this article, but can you really blame me? Nee or ” née” is the feminine past participle of naitre, which literally translates to “to be born.” The male equivalent is “né.”
In other words, “Sarah Smith, née Jones.” Smith is Sarah’s husband’s surname in this case. She took that name after marrying him. Jones is her maiden name. I’m married but didn’t think it was necessary for my wife to take my surname. But each to their own.
