Riot’s change to VALORANT UI sees angry players demand it be reverted

Riot wanted to "reduce clutter," but players don't agree.

Many players are still discovering VALORANT‘s latest-released agent Gekko, who joined the roster alongside the update 6.05 earlier this month.

While he was the update’s main highlight, other changes that weren’t mentioned in the official patch notes went unnoticed for a time.

One of these is a small change made to the user interface, which removes the “headshot” below the kill banner. The change was introduced to improve “visual clarity” because it added non-essential information, according to Rioter Preeti Khanolkar.

Players have complained about this change on a Reddit thread, asking the developer to revert it or, at least, give the option to choose to display it or not in the interface. Some even thought the removal was a bug that was supposed to be fixed.

“Can we at least add it back as a toggleable feature please?” asked the highest-voted answer to her comment. “The headshot text was in such a good spot: it was easy to know if I hit a headshot without having to divert my eyes to the top right to see the kill feed, especially during gunfights.”

Although the headshot notification isn’t purely essential to VALORANT‘s playstyle, players argued it was rewarding and motivated them to perform better.

Other players complained about the interface change not being included in the official patch notes, leaving players in the dark for days. “Even small changes like this should be included in patch notes each release,” read a comment. “That way, people don’t think it’s a bug and incorrectly raise it.”

It’s still unclear if the notification will be reinstated in the game or added as a setting in the future. Preeti Khanolkar has yet to respond to the comments on the thread or on social media.

Meanwhile, the developer is already looking ahead with the next update, 6.06, planned to be introduced to live servers later today. It will be light, only bringing a few fixes on Yoru and Lotus.
