An Overwatch short film won a Webby

The people have spoken.

The Last Bastion, Blizzard’s touching Overwatch short, didn’t win the official Webby Award, but it did win the People’s Voice title.

The Webby Awards, presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, gave the Webby Award for best writing in a film or video to New York Times Magazine’s Great Performers: L.A. Noir. The people, however, chose The Last Bastion as their winner.

Other videos nominated for the award include Honest Trailers, Last Week Tonight, and Save Our Snowmen.

The Last Bastion tells the story of Overwatch hero Bastion. Created as a war weapon, Bastion wakes up after the omnic crisis to find himself as the only Bastion left; a war between humans and omnics has wiped the rest of the units out. He meets Ganymede, a little yellow bird, in the forest, and together, they get Bastion reacquainted with life after the war.

Using only beeps and boops, Blizzard is able to tell a moving story about hope and loss—and clearly fans appreciate that.

It’s one of six animated shorts Blizzard has released to tell Overwatch’s story. With them, the developer sporadically introduces new lore with digital comics and origin stories. They’ve become an important part of the Overwatch universe, and will likely be released as the game moves forward.
