Wordle game help: 5-letter words with ‘U’ as the only vowel

It looks like a tough start for your game, but we can help.

Since its October 2021 launch, Wordle has evolved into an internet phenomenon thanks to its simple and effective format. Each day, the game will pick a different five-letter word from the English language, which players must guess in up to six tries over a maximum of 24 hours. The word is the same for all users on the same calendar day, but there are no clues to start: all you need to do is enter your first guess.

Recommended Videos

After each guess, Wordle turns the letters you used into clues by changing their colors: green means they are in the correct place, yellow means they are in the wrong place, and gray means they are not a part of the answer at all. That is why most of the strategies that longtime players have come up with involve a strong word or combination of words that can give you some good information right off the bat. But languages are vast and so are the possibilities of letter combinations, which means no strategy works the same way every day.

Let’s say you start with the most popular strategy, which is finding the vowels first through a combination of vowel-heavy words, and today you find the information that the only vowel in your word is a “U.” There are still hundreds of possibilities, but it’s likely that few of them come to mind right away. To help organize your thoughts and make sure you know what to do next, check out the list and guide below.

Spending your first guesses entirely on finding vowels means you probably have very little information on the consonants in your word. But make sure to use that little information to your advantage: If a letter came out gray in previous guesses, cross out all the words on the list above that contain it. If it came out yellow, cross out the words where it appears in the same position that gave you the yellow clue. And if any of them came out green by any chance, make sure to cross out all the words that don’t fit that criteria.

To spend your remaining guesses wisely and get the Wordle answer right, it is important to not re-use letters that you know aren’t a part of the word. One possible strategy is starting from the most common letters on the list, which are, respectively: “S,” “R,” “Y,” “T,” and “L.” Combine as many of them as you can, such as in words like “YURTS” or “FLUNG,” to try and find the right ones faster. You might need to adapt those choices to the information you have at hand.

It is also important to keep in mind that one of the consonants might be repeated—or the “U” itself, though that only happens in seven of the words—and that the game will never pick a plural form as the answer to the puzzle.

If you’re still unsure and don’t want to wait until Wordle resets at midnight local time, you can always look up the answer to today’s puzzle (which we update around 12am CT).
