Alfonso Ribeiro doesn’t own the “Carlton dance,” putting lawsuit against Fortnite developer in doubt

That's probably not what Ribeiro wanted to hear.

Actor Alfonso Ribeiro reportedly received some bad news about his lawsuit against Epic Games.

Ribeiro, known for his role as Carlton on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, filed a lawsuit in December over the dance emote “Fresh” in Fortnite: Battle Royale, which is seemingly inspired by Carlton’s dance on the show. But it doesn’t seem like he’d win this battle if it goes to court, according to TMZ.

“A registration specialist for the U.S. Copyright Office told Alfonso’s attorney that the actor’s bid to lock down the rights to the dance is being denied,” TMZ wrote. “The copyright pro said Alfonso’s moves amount to nothing more than a ‘simple dance routine.'”

Ribeiro’s lawsuit is still active, though, according to TMZ. Ribeiro also attempted to sue NBA 2K18 developer Take-Two Interactive for using the Carlton dance in that game.

Rapper 2 Milly and Instagram personality Backpack Kid are also suing Take-Two and Epic for cases similar to Ribeiro’s lawsuit. Ribeiro, 2 Milly, and Backpack Kid are all being represented by the same law firm, Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP.
