Overwatch could have had a cat hero that donned a jetpack

Overwatch is great—but I think we can all agree it would be better with a cat hero.

And it’s really too bad for us, because the Overwatch team at Blizzard once had a concept for a furry kitten character. The team loved the cat, which wore a jetpack, but it was too off the rails, according to Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan.

“There was this one hero that was a huge internal debate on the team because we just loved it so much but it didn’t make it,” Kaplan told GameSpot. “It was this jetpack and it had this cat that laid in it, like a cat does. Then every once in awhile it would paw at the controls. It was a cat in a jetpack.”

Kaplan continued: “That was one of those moments that helped define Overwatch. We just went, ‘Yeah, that’s probably too far.’ But yes, we had a cat hero.” Okay, so, a gorilla scientist is okay, but not a cat that controls a jetack. Got it.

Just imagine those furry little cat paws playing with some buttons and accidentally firing off an ultimate. “When I’m playing Overwatch the cat is on the desk and walking in front of me or if I have a bottle cap on the desk it has to walk over and knock it off,” Kaplan added. “We just imagined having that.”

It’s not a hero we’re likely to see in Overwatch anytime soon—or at all. While we are enjoying imagining little kittens running around in-game, Blizzard finds it too much of a stray.
