‘Wowie Zowie’: Wonder players love Mario’s new voice

It’s both new, yet, familiar

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been out since Oct. 20, and players are already sharing their opinion of the new voice of the Italian plumber. While many still miss the original voice of Charles Martinet, the new Mario voice by Kevin Afghani seems to hit all the right notes.

Back in Aug. 2023, Charles Martinet officially announced that he would stop voicing Mario and become a Nintendo ambassador instead. Nintendo even released a video where Martinet said his heartfelt goodbyes to fans

This got the community worried about who the new voice of Mario would be. Fortunately, voice actor Kevin Afghani, who previously lent his voice to characters from Dragon Ball R&R and Genshin Impact, proved to be a fantastic pick, according to Nintendo fans.

Wonder players took to Reddit to state Afghani’s voice of Mario (and Luigi) feels different, yet familiar. While the actor doesn’t try to copy Martinet’s voice straight up, he does a good job of making Mario sound similar, but adds his own twist.

Charles Martinet voiced Mario for over 30 years and, in that time, gave the character many iconic catchphrases such as ‘Let’s-a-go,’ ‘Wa-hoo,’ and everyone’s favorite ‘It’s-a-me.’ While Afghani still has a long way to go, Super Mario Bros. Wonder players have already fallen for his catchy ‘Wowie Zowie’ line. Afghani also expressed his gratitude to the fans via a Tweet.

It should also be noted that other than Mario, Charles Martinet also voiced Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and many other characters. Will Afghani be able to fill in the enormous shoes of Charles Martinet? Only time will tell, but so far, he seems to be wearing them well.
