Aggro Token Druid Guide: Crabs Everywhere!

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Token Druid was always known as a deck that relied on filling the board using Violet Teacher and a combination of spells. With some of the low cost spells moving out from Standard, people are taking a more aggressive approach combining the usage of murlocs and beasts. With Living Mana being  one of the strongest additions to the class in Un’goro, you do not need to rely on Violet Teacher combos to gain board presence and the card allows you to fill the board using just one card at the expense of your mana crystals.

The deck has been doing extremely well and there are tons of variations you will find that involve moving tech cards in and out and the usage of the Water package (murlocs). We will take a look at Tylerootd’s Rank 1 Legend Water Token Druid list today that is extremely powerful in the current metgame.

Card Choices

We combine a lot of Murloc, Beast and Pirate synergies along with cheap buffs and comeback mechanisms like Living Mana in the deck.

Tech Cards: Golakka Crawler and Hungry Crab make it into the deck to counter some of the top decks in the meta. Since Patches the Pirate is seen in a lot of decks along with a couple or more pirates even in non-Pirate decks, Golakka Crawler can come in very useful against them. You can also use it on your own pirates to make a big minion. Hungry Crab is specifically included to target Murloc Paladin as well as any deck that runs the Water package like Aggro/Token Druid. Just like Golakka Crawler, it can be used on minions in your own deck as well to get value or simply can be thrown out to fill in a board slot and targeted with cheap buffs. Both the cards are also beasts and can add to the beast synergies in the deck.

Pirates: Bloodsail Corsair works as an anti-weapon card and also pulling out Patches the Pirate helps you add board presence for cheap board buffs.

Beast Synergy: Enchanted Raven, Vicious Fledgling and the two card cards we mentioned above make up for the beast package in our deck and we also have mark-of-yshaarj in the deck to help us buff our minions and also draw a card if we land the card on one of our beasts.

Buffs: Power of the Wild and Mark of the Lotus are our buff cards and Savage Roar is a one turn attack buff which serves as your most potent win condition as well. Power of the Wild when generating a 3/2 minion also can activate your beast synergies with Mark of Y’shaarj as well so the card fits into both the beast and buff categories.

Water Package: The Water package of Murloc Warleader, finja-the-flying-star and Bluegill Warrior has been making into a lot of decks and in such a board oriented deck it makes sense to add in the package. While you can skip the cards entirely and have a non-Murloc version of the deck, this list just seems to work a whole lot better and since Finja draws out cards from the deck, it makes the deck a lot more consistent and skips a lot of bad draws that you might have.

Other cards: Innervate makes it into the deck for getting those swingy turns and snowball the board into victories. Being able to develop a massive board that cannot be dealt with easily early on and then using buffs can help you win games very quickly. Living Mana is one of the best comeback cards in the deck just in case your board gets wiped out and there are very few cards that can punish you for playing the card. Having the ability to develop a big board with just one card at the expense of your mana crystals which you can get back once the minions die makes this card a must have. It is a much better alternative to Violet Teacher in Token Druid because you do not need to chain multiple cards to get value out of it and it is a one-size-fits-all solution depending on how much mana you have. Fire Fly is another inclusion in the deck that fits Token decks perfectly.

Gameplay

You want to establish early board presence and land maximum value buffs to push in as much face damage as possible. Except against extremely aggressive decks where you want to be ahead on board at all times. Do not over-commit into AoE spells that your opponent might have and you are good to go. A good tip to know when playing the deck would be that Living Mana only destroys your actual crystals and it does not work with Innervate so do not attempt to ramp up the card with Innervate! If Mark of Y’shaarj allows you to get good trades even if it means the buff target is not a beast, you should go ahead with it.

Conclusion

This is a very board-centric aggro deck and if you happen to love fast decks and the Egg Druid/Token Druid playstyle then you should definitely give the deck a shot. You can exclude the Murloc package if you do not have Finja and include more cheap minions to flood the board.
