The return of Super Smash Bros. to the esports spotlight is in full effect.
Annual fighting game event CEO 2014 was held over the weekend in Orlando, Fla. with tournaments being run for nine different titles; 262 players entered the Super Smash Bros. Melee competition, trailing only the number of entrants for Ultra Street Fighter 4.
The competition was fierce. Defending MLG Anaheim champion Joseph “Mango” Marquez emerged from the upper bracket looking as strong as ever with a win over Sweden’s Adam “Armada” Lindgren.
But Lindgren was not so easily denied. After defeating Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma in the consolidation match, Lindgren reached the grand final to set up a rematch of the MLG Anaheim final. And this time it was Lindgren who would come out on top, sweeping the first set against Marquez and winning a second harder-fought set to emerge as champion.
CEO is over. First in both Melee events =D

Lindgren publicly aired his distaste with the prevalence of Fox players at the event, but the top eight finishers actually displayed a strong variety of characters, with eight different characters used between them.
The loss to Lindgren was difficult for the notoriously proud Marquez to swallow, especially coming off of his triumph in Anaheim with a crowd chanting his name and the name of his country.
I apologize to all of the nation I will make all proud of evo #scoutshonor

But as Marquez alluded to, he might soon have a chance at a rubber match. The world’s biggest fighting game event, Evo, will commence on July 11. And after a brief controversy involving Nintendo’s refusal to allow for the game’s inclusion, Super Smash Bros. Melee will feature in the Evo line-up.
A potential rematch between Lindgren and Marquez isn’t the only reason for excitement heading into Evo. Other international players such as Masaya “Amsa” Chikamoto and Gonzalo “Zero” Barrios will be looking to make their mark on the event, as will domestic stars Debiedma, Jason “Mew 2 King” Zimmerman.
