Europe’s top Fortnite: Battle Royale players finished week three of the Summer Skirmish series with a bang, crowning the $500,000 Duos tournament champions.
Team Atlantis’ Dmitri “Mitr0” Van de Vrie and Max “Magin” Merrien finished atop the leaderboard today to secure the $60,000 grand prize. While they didn’t wind up with the most kills in any of their games, failing to get the attached $6,500 bonus as a result, the pair valued their lives instead and outlasted their competition.
This week’s tournament format valued Victory Royales at four points while five-kill games awarded two points. Teams had the goal of reaching 13 points, the winning point total, before all of the others to win the tournament.
The Swedish-English pair won three of the nine games, becoming the only team this weekend to win more than two games. Mitr0 and Magin concluded the competition early with Victory Royales in the eighth and ninth games, ending any chances for other duos to grab the title. Fwexy and Pate1k of Main finished in second, just a point shy from the 13-point mark to win. GreyFox and Mops rounded out the top three, while last week’s runner-up, Vato, finished in eighth place.
The tournament’s conclusion marks the end of the Summer Skirmish’s third week. While many thought last week’s scoring system may have been the best way for competitive Fortnite, this week’s format seemed very popular among viewers. Although individual kills were valued less than last week, many of the games this week were deemed entertaining by the audience.
This certainly doesn’t mean that this scoring system will be the official format when the Fortnite World Cup rolls around—and with more than half of the series remaining, Epic will likely try out a few more interesting systems for games. The “Race to the Crown” format, however, would seem to be a valid option after this eight-week series concludes.
