How to complete Beneath the Necropolis in Destiny 2

Time for a refresher.

With Ash & Iron, Destiny 2 added dungeon lairs to the Portal activities. Those are encounters or series of encounters from some of the game’s dungeons. The lair from the Pit of Heresy, Beneath the Necropolis, features a few opening encounters of the dungeon.

Beneath the Necropolis is not just the Necropolis encounter—it also includes the Ogre maze and the Chamber of Suffering. The activity has a 15-minute timer to get bonus core, so you and your fireteam need to be quick and organized.

Here’s how to complete Beneath the Necropolis activity in Destiny 2.

Necropolis

At the beginning of the dungeon, keep going forward and jump down the big hole protected by the barrier (the barrier drops automatically). You’ll reach the Necropolis encounter after you go through a few caves.

The entire area is a city with towers, and some of these towers have Hive runes above them. At the base of each tower, there’s a door. Go into the tower with a triangle rune (the closest one to the top). In there, you’ll find an Accursed Swordbearer. Kill the Swordbearer and grab its sword.

In the room, there are three chains with Hive runes. You need to go into the towers with those runes and kill their bosses using the sword.

There are three boss types, and here’s how to beat them:

  • Wizard: Sword’s heavy attack.
  • Knight: Sword’s light attack.
  • Shrieker: Sword’s block to reflect its projectiles at it.

Once you defeat all three bosses, you’ll see a notification in the bottom left and a green beacon in the middle of the Necropolis. Go down there and through the door to reach the next area. In the room with lots of doors, there’s a narrow passage between walls in the bottom right—use it to reach the maze.

The maze is a series of caves and passageways patrolled by Ogres. Ogres are immune, so you must sneak through caves to kill Barrier Champions, grab the Void orbs, and dunk them at three gates to open the path forward. The easiest way to navigate the encounter is using the map below.

Chamber of Suffering

Right behind the gates is the Chamber of Suffering. Stand on the plate beneath the totem in the back, kill Barrier Champions around the room, grab the Void orbs, and dunk them next to the plate. You can’t leave the plate for long, as the totem will enrage and you’ll wipe.

Have one player stand on the plate at all times, or kill Champions from afar to make a run for the orb. There’s just enough time for you to grab the orb and come back without dying.

You need to dunk six orbs in total, and after each dunk, adds will spawn around the room. Bring machine guns, like Unwavering Duty, or anything with strong add-clear capabilities. After dunking all six orbs, the encounter and the activity itself will be complete.
