Black Ops 6 knife with ‘aim assist’ has players freaking out

To make matters worse, it even explodes!

Call of Duty fans got their first look at the Black Ops 6 campaign yesterday in a preview during Gamescom 2024, but amidst the chaotic gunfight which featured former U.S. President Bill Clinton and riding motorcycles through buildings, eager players are losing their minds over a new piece of tech—a homing knife.

The Homing Knife is a new piece of kit coming with Black Ops 6, with the player seen whipping it out mid-mission and throwing it at a group of enemies. Time slows after the knife is thrown, and the player can be seen controlling the direction of the knife before it explodes. The clip abruptly ends as the mission fast-forwarded for the preview, but the glimpse at the Homing Knife is enough to send the CoD community into a frenzy.

The question on everyone’s minds was whether the Homing Knife would be available in multiplayer, with scores of fans on X (formerly Twitter) both excited and concerned over how widespread such a weapon would be in CoD. The idea that players could run around in Blops 6 lobbies throwing and directing knives mid-flight is a little scary, but given it slows time down in the campaign, it probably wouldn’t work the same way in multiplayer.

That said, some believe nothing is stopping an altered version of the blade from being made available as a score or kill streak, working similarly to the other remote-controlled streak rewards like the RC-XD. It’d probably be a lot slower while in the air, but if done right, the Homing Knife could help ensure Black Ops 6 sticks the landing.

The Gamescom campaign preview has been well-received by fans who are crossing their fingers for a better single-player experience than was received with Modern Warfare 3. “The covert [and] clandestine nature of the missions is so good with things like sabotage, wiretapping, etc.,” one fan said, while others hope this edition of CoD sticks by a “linear and cinematic style” instead of the open-world “garbage” we saw last year.

We’ll get another look at the CoD Next event next week on Aug. 28 before the game enters an open beta. Black Ops 6 remains on track to release in October.
