Soulja Boy is back at it again, but not to “superman dat oh,” as he put it in his one-hit wonder “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” in 2007. This time, DeAndre “Soulja Boy” Cortez Way has been in the headlines for the development of his blatant knock-off video game consoles.
The Chicago entrepreneur has been under scrutiny from the very beginning of his video game empire. Soulja Boy announced he wanted to create his own esports organization in December, and since then, he released a set of consoles before they were promptly removed from his website after Nintendo issued a lawsuit. We thought it was all over for the rapper turned businessman, but then he released another handheld console that seems similar to the PS Vita on Jan. 13.
And in a recent interview with Complex, Soulja Boy revealed that the popular battle royale game Fortnite will be available on his next console. “Yes, we’re working on it,” Soulja Boy said. “Not this one, on the next one you can [play Fortnite].”
This was evidently a revelation for the publisher of Fortnite. Nick Chester, a spokesperson for Epic Games, responded to Soulja Boy’s claim by issuing a statement to gaming news site DualShockers, saying “you can’t play Fortnite on a rooted or jailbroken device due to anti-cheat measures.”
“We don’t know anything about the device,” Chester said on Twitter, suggesting that Soulja Boy didn’t speak to Epic prior to his announcement.
It remains to be seen when his next console will be released, and if it will indeed feature Fortnite. But for the time being, you can purchase the rapper’s SouljaPad tablet, the SouljaPod earphones, the SouljaWatch, and the SouljaPhone HT70 on his website.
