GTA 6’s release date pushed back to 2026: ‘We need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve’

The highly anticipated instalment needs a bit more time to cook.

“We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” Rockstar Studios said X (formerly Twitter), delaying the release to next year.

GTA 6 has been one of the most highly anticipated games of the year despite not having an official release date—until now. It’s generally bad news for gamers, but it’s nice to see Rockstar is taking its time rather than rushing out a half-assed title. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait.

GTA 6 is set to release on May 28, 2026. The game’s first trailer dropped on Dec. 5, 2023, garnering over 250 million views. It led to fans on social media speculating on its next trailer release, with eagle-eyed people investigating every small detail to understand the game’s upcoming features.

GTA 6 was going to be a Game of the Year contender this year, as speculated by multiple game critics, media, and fans. As it is coming next year now, fans can at least now focus on other big AAA titles such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Borderlands 4, Ghost of Yōtei, and many more. The game industry has seen various indie and independent studios doing well, and these games should be added to the list of potential Game of the Year contenders.

While the developer has apologized for the delay, it said it will share more details with the fans soon. As they gear up for the release next year, fans can expect to see more trailers and content about the game.
