While you get a white-colored horse right in the prologue, eventually you’ll get to change it after reaching the Stables. If you’re confused about how to complete the Old Trails quest in Ghost of Yotei, we’ve got you covered.

How to complete the Old Trails quest in Ghost of Yotei

After completing a few quests, you will get the Old Trails quest in Ghost of Yotei, where you’ll have to find the Stables point of interest and the Stablemaster. To reach here, use your existing horse to cross the Sarubetsu River and the grasslands, which should be filled with multiple horses galloping in the fields.

Once you reach the Stable, find the Stablemaster and interact with him. He should tell you he is freeing all his horses because Saito’s men want to add them to his army. Shortly after that, Saito’s men will ambush the Stable, and you can challenge them for a stand off, or use the tall grass to take them down and talk to the Stablemaster. It should trigger a cutscene, where you’ll have to track down the horses as a child.

Locate the horse manure on the ground first, then go to the other side of the pond while following the edges to find fresh tracks. You won’t be able to use your whistle here to call the horses, so climb up the rocks next to you with the NPC and whistle again to call the horses and get a promise from the Stablemaster to give you a horse in the future.

Which horse should you choose in Ghost of Yotei?

As you conclude the Old Trails quest in Ghost of Yotei, the Stablemaster notices the fatigue in your loyal horse. With a look of sympathy, he keeps his promise and gives you the chance to choose one of his three finest and strongest steeds.

While some players may feel that certain horses offer distinct advantages over others, that isn’t the case—all three are identical in performance and differ only in color: black, grey, and white. There is also a fourth horse, available exclusively to players who purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition, similar to the bonus offered in Ghost of Tsushima

Once you choose your horse, the decision is permanent—you won’t be able to change it later in the game. You’ll also need to select a name for your steed from three options: Shimaki, Mochizuki, and Homura. Atsu will use this chosen name to call out to the horse during gameplay, especially when urging it to gallop through the grass, adding a personal touch that makes the bond feel uniquely yours.

To call your horse in Ghost of Yotei, press the left button on your D-pad on your PlayStation controller, and your horse should come next to you. You can’t summon it inside enemy territory, but you can use it anywhere in the open world to travel between different points of interest on the map. You can also use the Shrines to put points in your horse to use it to start combat against rogue Ronins in the wild. Be sure to use the white flower trails to gain a speed boost while riding your horse, and collect points to make it even faster and stronger.
