In 2022, Squanch Games released High on Life, a comedy-packed first-person shooter where your guns talk to you. The game was loosely inspired by Rick and Morty, and soon, it’s getting its own animated series adaptation.
Emmy winner J.B. Smoove is reported to produce the series, according to Deadline. It’s apparently being developed by Squanch Games (co-founded by Justin Roiland, who also co-created Rick and Morty), Striker Entertainment, and Alternate Side Productions, Smoove’s production company. The latter will be responsible for creating the animated series, while the game’s developers and Striker Entertainment’s Mandy Bardisbanian and Russell Binder are executive producers.
J.B. Smoove voiced one of the characters, named Gus, in High on Life. Judging by his comments, he always had an idea to bring the video game to TV screens.
“When Squanch Games originally reached out to JB Smoove (I like to talk about myself in the third person) about voicing a character in their incredible video game High on Life, my first question was what does my character look like? […] Now that I’m partnered with Squanch Games and Striker Entertainment to bring the hilarious High On Life to series it feels like it was inevitable,” Smoove told Deadline.
In that same interview, the producer praised the game, saying it’s “wild, weird, and wonderful.” The show is meant to be “that and more,” so expect High on Life on TV, but on steroids.
Binder pointed out how they see High on Life as a truly unique and hilarious piece of the video game industry. Given Smoove voiced a character in-game and is one of its biggest fans, they “didn’t have to look any further,” and immediately partnered with Alternate Side Production to help adapt the game.
At the time of writing, there are no details regarding its plot or release date. However, once the project begins development, we expect to know more about it, so stay tuned.
